"This is unexpected because there are a lot of good riders" - Tim Wellens reflects on his upset time trial victory in Poland

Tim Wellens became Belgian time trial champion earlier this year and showed his class against the clock again on Tuesday. The UAE Team Emirates rider emerged victorious in the uphill time trial at Tour de Pologne, beating the likes of Jonas Vingegaard.

Wellens got out of bed with good legs today, but he did not immediately count on the victory. "I felt very good today. Of course you always try to go for the victory, but this one is unexpected, because there are a lot of good riders here. It was very warm, but it was only a short time trial," Sporza reports his first impressions of the day.

Tour de Pologne winner from 2016, Wellens certainly didn't mind to make a trip again this year. "I have good memories here and so I am always very motivated to come back. Moreover, it is also a course that suits me well."

For Wellens, this time trial victory is a welcome boost, after he lost quite a lot of time yesterday in the opening stage. "Yesterday I lost a lot of time due to a crash, so the general classification will no longer be in it for me, unfortunately."
