Jonas Vingegaard is set to become a father once again now in late August, that was the main reason for his absence from the Vuelta a España. The Visma rider is currently racing the Tour de Pologne and this could well be his last of the season, depending on how the upcoming weeks go.
"After Poland he focuses on his second child. First of all, we have to see how the birth goes, and then we make plans accordingly," team DS Marteen Wynants told Ekstra Bladet at the Tour de Pologne. The man in the car of Team Visma | Lease a Bikes responded confirmed that this could indeed be the Dane's last race of the season, but nothing is excluded.
Vingegaard has been focusing on the Tour de France since November and admitted after the Tour that he was physically and psychologically exhausted. His preparation not only included the regular strict training and nutrition regiment but also a necessary recovery from a brutal crash that took place in early April at Itzulia Basque Country which took saw him break several bones and a punctured lung. He miraculously recovered and went on to finish second in the Tour.
He had hinted already at the time that in his schedule could be San Sebastián and the Tour de Pologne, much due to the fast that he knew that from the next weeks onwards he will be on full alert with his wife Trine for the birth of their second child. He is taking no risks and will not be racing throughout this period and most likely the weeks following as well.
Initially, the World Championships in Zurich, late September (and Il Lombardia) could be good goals for the climber, but it is not known at the time what he and the team will opt for. "So far we haven't talked. First of all, he rides around Poland, and then he focuses on the child," Wynants assures. "Then we'll see what's left after that. I don't know what the exact date of birth is so I can't say 'he's ready from this date'."
