The opening stage of the Giro d'Italia did not suit the characteristics of the Colombian riders who are participating in the Giro d'Italia 2023. None have finished inside the Top30, which is not positive towards their possible GC ambitions.
As expected, Rigoberto Urán finished in the best place, although far from the winner Remco Evenepoel. 'Rigo' is no longer looking for the overall. As he did in the last Vuelta a España, in this Giro he will be looking to win a stage, so losing more than a minute and a half on the opening day is not a bad thing for him.
We don't know if Santiago Buitrago will focus on the overall or also go for stages. In any case, it was not a course that suited the Bahrain Victorious climber, who lost more than two minutes to Remco Evenepoel and more than a minute to his potential rivals for the top 5 of the race.
Finally, we must talk about the two Movistar Team riders. Young Einer Rubio proved not to be a good time trialist and dropped almost three minutes which makes it a difficult start. Gaviria, thinking about his first chance to win this Sunday, finished 3 minutes and 26 seconds behind. With the sprints and the mountains his time will come.
Colombian riders' ranking in Giro d'Italia stage 1:
36. Rigoberto Urán at 1:36
65. Santiago Buitrago at 2:02
100. Einer Rubio at 2:45.
154. Fernando Gaviria at 3:26
