Filippo Ganna proved to be ready to take on the pink jersey today at the
Giro d'Italia, but he came face-to-face with an unbeatable Remco Evenepoel. The
INEOS Grenadiers put on a strong ride to beat the rest of the competition, but was still 22 seconds behind the stage winner.
"I rode the vaues we predicted. So I can't help but be super happy with the speed I achieved. Only, there was nothing to do about Remco. I can only say 'chapeau'," Ganna said following his effort. Having beaten the likes of Primoz Roglic and Stefan Küng - alongside João Almeida and Tao Geoghegan Hart who surged to a strong result - Ganna showed great form into the Giro.
However Remco Evenepoel, who started his effort two minutes before, was already evaporating the leading times. By the time Ganna started the final ascent the win looked already certain for the Belgian, who took full advantage of the opening day's nature.
Ganna will have another time-trial where he'll have the opportunity to fight for the win. In the upcoming days he will be protecting his leader, mainly Tao Geoghegan Hart who rode to a very strong fourth place on the road and has kicked off his fight for pink in the ideal position. "Morale is fine in our team. The Giro has only just started, we still have 20 days to try to win," Ganna assured.
