“This is confirmation of my good form" - Florian Vermeersch third at the Giro del Veneto

Just a matter of days after he finished second at the Gravel World Championships, Lotto Dstny's Florian Vermeersch was once again in the mix for victory at the Giro del Veneto, coming home in third.

“This is confirmation of my good form," the 24-year-old Belgian rider told Wielerflits in his post-race interview after finishing behind winner on the day, Dorian Godon and runner-up Tobias Johannessen. “For a long time it looked like the break would stay ahead. With Brent Van Moer, Stan Dewulf and Jonas Abrahamsen you had three fast drivers at the front. I thought they had a good chance, especially considering that with thirty kilometres to go we were still three minutes behind."

Ultimately though, the breakaway would be reeled in by the chasing peloton and heading into the finale, the race was all back together. "It suddenly went very quickly, after which I indicated that I was very good," he continues. "It's a shame I couldn't finish it, but I'm happy with this result.”

“I said I wanted to come from behind. In the end I was also quite ideal when turning up the climb, around tenth position. I was able to come out from behind with speed. Fifty meters from the finish I am still first, but there are still two left. Too bad, but that means they were better," Vermeersch concludes. “I do feel strong, but I take it day by day. Without stress."
