Remco Evenepoel is in fine form
Remco Evenepoel will race Il Lombardia this weekend in a more relaxed state than before after having won the European Championships. He has looked back at his evolution in the Grand Tours and answered questions on a potential participation at the 2027 Giro d'Italia.
The route is to be announced within the next month, only weeks after the Tour de France's. This ultimately means that the decision from the Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe camp should come in November, as Evenepoel has proven this year to have a priority pick within even the German team.
“The door is open, yes. I think we will wait for the parcours and then see what comes out," Evenepoel said as reported by Domestique.
"But, I mean, it’s a race that I had to leave in the pink jersey, which was really painful, so there is for sure a door open – but that doesn't mean that I am starting".
The decisions will begin being made in November, and solidified in December as the World Tour teams gather in Spain to train ahead of the 2027 season. With only rumours circling at this point in time, the choice of all the main GC riders is yet to be known.
“The door is open to look at the parcours, and then we’ll see in the winter if I will step into the open door or not.”

Evenepoel's improvement in the Grand Tours

Evenepoel can be sure of one thing, which is that his abilities in the three-week races haven't faded since the 2024 Tour de France. This summer, his build-up and execution of the Tour de France plan appeared perfect.
“The biggest learning we had was my stable Tour de France, the way I kind of grew in the race and I was still on a very good level in the third week".
With the coaching of Jonas Vingegaard's former right-hand man Tim Heemskerk, the Olympic Champion reached a level never before seen in the mountains, and appeared to be the rider that was growing the most into the race - the opposite of his disaster 2025 Tour stint.
“I think the biggest improvement we made is in terms of Grand Tours. That’s something that we will take for the future and to me it was a big motivation to keep going for the Grand Tours," Evenepoel added, assuring the Grand Tours will remain a major priority.
Without Tadej Pogacar in the way - which happened at the Vuelta a España - the Belgian could've conquered the Tour de France, something which would've made his career.
"Okay, we know that Jonas [Vingegaard] crashed, but in the final result, there was only one guy ahead. The victory was quite close, but not super close, so that’s something that motivates me and the team as well to keep dreaming.”
