BORA-hansgrohe sprinter,
Jordi Meeus finished second in today's opening stage of
Volta ao Algarve. It is the fourth time this season that the Belgian sprinter came just a little short of the victory, this time beaten by the veteran Uno-X rider Alexander Kristoff.
'I was close again, but not close enough, 'Fortunately, there are more sprint stages to come. I was really getting there, but Kristoff's teammate Søren Wærenskjold was also there. So I had to find a bit of space. Eventually I found that too, but by then it was a bit too late", Meeus said in the post race interview.
Despite his second place, Meeus doesn't throw the towel and praises his team leadout, as he looks forward to the stage 3 of Volta ao Algarve, the other sprint stage that suits well the sprinters.
The team did a great job. So I'm very sorry I don't manage to finish. The final was quite tough today, especially because we had to go over a small climb at two kilometres from the finish. The final sprint was hugely hectic. That was mainly because of the strong crosswind. The legs were excellent today, but unfortunately it ended up being second place", Meeus concluded.
