“Already from the facial expression of the gynaecologist, it was clear that something was wrong,” Stefan Küng recalled in
quotes gathered by Blick. At the time, the couple were already parents to Noé, born in 2022. Their second pregnancy, however, ended in a miscarriage.
The devastating news came during what should have been a routine check-up. “In the 17th or 18th week,” as Céline Küng remembers, the gynaecologist was unable to detect any amniotic fluid. The couple were immediately referred to hospital. There, “the ground was pulled from under our feet,” Stefan Küng said.
Instead of leaving the appointment with a routine update, as is usually the case during an uncomplicated pregnancy, the couple were left shocked and emotionally empty. Doctors recommended proceeding with a birth in order to reduce the risk of long-term trauma.

“The birth is important for the processing,” Céline Küng explained. Even so, she says the situation was extremely difficult to endure. “We asked ourselves: how will we survive this? You have a baby in your belly and you can’t even imagine not having it anymore.”
Stefan Küng had already spoken about the experience in May 2024. “You can never forget something like that – it comes back again and again.” Now, recounting the stillbirth, he becomes visibly emotional. “The child was as big as my hand. That was the second major shock moment after the diagnosis. Then you realise how much has to go right for a healthy child – in this case, unfortunately, something didn’t fit, so it ultimately wasn't meant to be.”
Finding hope and a new beginning
The process of coming to terms with the loss took a long time. “But I never asked myself why this happened to us or whether we had done something wrong,” Küng explained. Doctors quickly reassured the couple that it was “a whim of nature.” Over time, they also discovered how many people had experienced the same fate, even within their own circle of colleagues.
Despite everything, the wish for a second child was eventually fulfilled. In July 2025, Stefan and Céline Küng welcomed a second son, Rémi, giving their eldest, Noé, a younger brother.
