After a bout of Covid in the early season there were questions on whether
Tadej Pogacar would be entering his first race of the season in the form that he has shown in the last few years. Those doubts however seemed to have been pushed away in today's time-trial at the
UAE Tour as the
UAE Team Emirates rider came home with the fourth best time, 18 seconds behind stage winner
Stefan Bissegger.
“It was a really fast course with a big tail wind on the way out and then on the way back it was just down to raw power. I did my strongest 10 minutes ever so I’m pretty happy, it was a good day out and we’re looking strong for the next days," Pogacar confirmed after the stage. It is a big deal for a rider like Pogacar to claim he's gotten a new best power output over this distance, it is expected that he will be in great form for the stages that lie ahead.
He added: "João and Mikkel were well up there today also so in the team the guys are all up around the top. We’re all feeling good and in fine shape for the rest of this race. Tomorrow the first mountain stage will be another big test.”
Besides finishing fourth, UAE also had
João Almeida finish fifth which puts the team in a great position when it comes to their overall ambitions. Tomorrow at Jebel Jais there will be a battle between the climbers and UAE have a chance to grab the lead of the race with either of those riders, who will have George Bennett and Rafal Majka as major support.
