Away from the spotlight, but the Mercan'Tour Classic Alpes Maritimes has taken place this Monday afternoon and in the winning position was Cristián Rodríguez, who has taken a much needed victory for Arkéa - B&B Hotels.
The Spaniard's attack came with a long distance to the finish, still 46 kilometers to go on the Col de la Couillole. It was a risky move but one that proved to be the right one as Rodríguez effectively distanced his rivals in a peloton that was completely fragmented, built a gap of around two minutes and then rode the two final climbs entirely on his own to take what was perhaps the most impressive result of his career.
Behind it was Equipo Kern Pharma as best of the rest, finishing second and third with José Felix Parra and Iván Sosa respectively, with both teams scoring important UCI points.
