The results of the regional political elections in northern Italy held over the weekend were unfavourable for former riders Sonny Colbrelli and Claudio Chiappucci as they failed to secure bright results.
After retiring from professional cycling in 2022 due to cardiac difficulties, Colbrelli made the decision to join the Forza Italia party in January, aligning himself with Silvio Berlusconi. He articulated a strong commitment to advancing the world of sports through his political endeavors, and also expressed his desire to improve road safety in response to the large number of cyclists who lost their lives on Italian roads in the previous year.
In spite of his geographic proximity to Valle Sabbia, his hometown, he received only 1,387 votes in Brescia, ultimately placing fourth in the competition for a spot on the Lombardy regional council.
Running for the liberal centrists alongside Letizia Moratti in Monza during the Lombardy elections, Chiappucci was only able to secure 121 votes.
