Tadej Pogacar claimed his third victory from the opening six stages of the 2026 Vuelta a Espana, beating Enric Mas in Castellon de la Plana after a remarkable gravel battle and a major scare on the final descent.
Pogacar appeared to have decided the stage when he attacked on Puerto El Bartolo and rode away from every general classification rival, but Mas produced an extraordinary response to catch the red jersey and lead over the summit.
The pair then nearly came unstuck when Pogacar skidded off the road on the descent, forcing him to unclip and negotiate the edge of a ditch before rejoining Mas. Having survived the incident, Pogacar comfortably beat the Spaniard in the two-rider sprint.
Primoz Roglic, Felix Gall, Richard Carapaz, Harold Tejada and Ramses Debruyne finished together 46 seconds later, allowing Pogacar and Mas to strengthen their positions relative to the rest of the leading contenders.
UAE refuse to release powerful breakaway
The 177.4-kilometre stage from Alcossebre to Castellon de la Plana began with more than 80 kilometres of attacks as riders fought to reach one of the first substantial breakaway opportunities of this Vuelta.
A powerful 16-rider group eventually escaped, featuring Wout van Aert, Pello Bilbao, Santiago Buitrago, George Bennett, Thomas Gloag, Andreas Kron and Debruyne. The latter was its most dangerous general classification presence, beginning the day 12th overall at 4:44.
Strong winds briefly split the peloton while the move was being formed. Pogacar, Roglic, Oscar Onley and Jay Vine were among those to reach a forward group, but the teams caught behind closed the separation before it could produce lasting damage.
The breakaway’s advantage approached three minutes on the Alto del Desierto de las Palmas. Van Aert collected maximum points at the intermediate sprint but was subsequently dropped by the tempo set by Bilbao and returned to the peloton.
UAE Team Emirates – XRG never allowed the escapees enough freedom to place the stage beyond Pogacar’s reach. Joao Almeida, Louis Vermaerke, Pavel Sivakov and Vine steadily reduced the deficit before the final climb, where only eight riders remained at the front.
Mas erases Pogacar’s gravel attack
Debruyne attacked the remnants of the breakaway on gradients reaching 18% shortly before the gravel. Behind him, Torres completed UAE’s final turn before Pogacar accelerated with four kilometres remaining to the summit.
Onley was initially the only contender capable of holding Pogacar’s wheel, but the Scot was soon dropped as the Slovenian began overtaking the remaining escapees. Pogacar caught Debruyne on the gravel and opened a sizeable advantage over Mas, Roglic, Gall, Carapaz and Onley.
Mas refused to allow the red jersey to disappear. The Movistar leader rode away from the other favourites, passed Debruyne and brought Pogacar back into sight after the longest gravel sector.
The gap collapsed on the final approach to the summit. Mas completed the junction and immediately moved past a visibly surprised Pogacar to collect the ten mountains points, while Roglic and Gall crossed approximately 30 seconds behind.

Pogacar attempted to place Mas under pressure on the technical descent but almost paid a significant price. The red jersey lost control approaching a left-hand bend, left the road and ran onto the grass.
Although he avoided falling, Pogacar had to unclip and negotiate the edge of a ditch before returning to the tarmac. Mas waited for the Slovenian and urged caution once the pair were reunited.
The interruption allowed Roglic, Gall and Debruyne to close within 15 seconds. Carapaz and Tejada subsequently joined them, creating a five-rider chase group as Onley lost further ground.
Once onto the flatter roads, Pogacar and Mas combined effectively and began rebuilding their advantage. They entered the final kilometre together with the stage victory assured, while Mas forced the faster-finishing Pogacar to lead.
Mas launched his sprint with approximately 100 metres remaining, but Pogacar immediately responded and crossed the line first. Mas finished on the same time after becoming the first rider at this Vuelta to bring back one of Pogacar’s committed climbing attacks, while the 46-second gap behind elevated him above Roglic in the battle for second overall.
