Results UAE Tour Women 2026 | Lorena Wiebes head and shoulders above the rest in second bunch sprint

Stage 2 of the UAE Tour Women saw Lorena Wiebes take another win, taking one of the most dominant and impressive sprint victories one could imagine.
The day's breakaway was formed by Petra Stiasny, Magdalene Lind, Sonia Rossetti and Sara Luccon. The quartet did manage to build a gap of several minutes, but without wind and the pan-flat desert roads it would be impossible to stay away from the peloton with the work of Team SD Worx - ProTime.
The catch was made with 29 kilometers to go, and the peloton then slowed down fully. The speed remained very low until the final 3 kilometers, when teams began accelerating in the highway road. However despite having no technical features, there was a high-speed crash involving amongst others, Marlen Reusser and Alison Jackson.
The sprint then was chaotic, with Franziska Koch trying to surprise, but the German rider was caught into the sprint and then Lorena Wiebes rode to a victory that was beyond comfortable, as no-one even managed to catch her wheel when she launched her sprint. Chiara Consonni and Nienke Veenhoven finished second and third.

- I don't know the key - I'm not a SD. as noted, Tadej is a freak of nature that is larger than many traditional climbers. Indurain was a good climber, sometimes great, but he was an amazing time trialist and he rode the TdF when there were multiple TTs and many were quite long. Big Mig could take minutes in a TT. If the courses were different, perhaps we would see a different result out of Remco. But, I believe, that he is not quite the build of a top top climber. - It could just be that in 2026 he's riding the Tour not the Giro, then let's say in 2027, Pogačar (assuming he wins the Tour and Vuelta in 2026) decides to get another Giro in, and then in 2028 Del Toro surpasses Pogačar and becomes UAE's leader for the Tour de France (while Pogačar chases Merckx and Coppi's record at the Giro - something which isn't out of reach if he puts his mind to it) and so on. Any sequence of events can happen leaving Del Toro without another decent chance at the Giro.

- I don't think it is people wanting to criticism Remco, his performance, effort or palmares. All of this is exceptional. It is a critique of how he handles himself as a professional. A perceived constant whining, excuses and a me first attitude. I don't even know how valid much of this is - he seems to be quite popular in the peloton. But he comes across as a bit petulant and very easy to dislike compared to the jovial all winning Tadej or polite and professional Mathieu.mij26-02-2026

Let's see how Finn and Bock do in the GC (from what has been shown, I don't they'll be able to challenge Zana but you never know). - yeah, you never know, but he doesn't seem to have been traumatized at all; he took it as just another event in his career. We'll see.

- My guess is that Remco has the physiology to climb really well, and consistently (as shown by his Vuelta win, Tour podium), but it's not something that comes naturally to him, meaning that he has to train really hard. That's why his base level is well below that of Pogačar and Vingegaard, because he can't remain at a top level year round. TTs and hilly classics come naturally to him obviously. For that reason, his disappointing performance in the UAE is not such a bad sign, considering what he's like. If the same happened to Pogačar or Vingegaard it would be way worse. I think he's a bit like Sam Welsford, who would love to stick to criteriums, and to win road races he has to train very hard. Unfortunately he does that for the Tour down under and nothing else.Rafionain-Glas26-02-2026
