The Tour of Bruges has seen a lot of crosswind action today and a bunch sprint finish that, as usual, decides the outcome of the race.
Unibet Rose Rockets were the team that came out on top, with
Dylan Groenewegen taking yet another win, the biggest of the year for the Dutch sprinter who has found his legs once again.
The race was marked by the strong winds from start to finish, with several attacks being launched but quickly getting caught also all throughout the Belgian classic. There was never a proper breakaway of the day, but instead small groups that would head off the front occasionally during the race; often splitting in a specific section where the crosswinds devastated the peloton.
The crashes were equally impactful on the race, as several mass falls led many to the ground. The race didn't feature any climbing and a peloton fully focused on a bunch sprint, and so the speed and tension was constantly high. Nevertheless a sizeable peloton headed to the final kilometers in Bruges still relatively compact and heading towards a bunch sprint - one less dangerous than the old De Panne finale however.
Davide Ballerini and Max Walscheid still tried with late attacks, but it was not possible to prevent the expected outcome. In the final sprint we saw Alpecin - Premier Tech deliver Jasper Philpsen in prime position however in the final meters the Belgian was overtaken by Dylan Groenewegen - just off an equally immpressive win at the GP Jean-Pierre Monseré.
The Unibet Rose Rockets rider took the team's biggest win in its history, and is a marking moment in which the team begins to properly challenge the World Tour outfits even in a race with an extremely high-level field. Philipsen finished second in a tight sprint.
