Red Bull - BORA - hansgrohe have taken the win today in a race that took place in their home country of Germany. In Cologne, the riders took on the Rund um Köln where it was Laurence Pithie who rode to victory, one over two Pinarello - Q36.5 riders who joined him in the finale.
The German race saw a breakaway of five riders: Michael Kukrle, Joshua Gdnitz, Rik van der Wal, Silas Koech and Ole Theiler. The difficult weather conditions did however do some damage in the peloton, and despite lacking meaningful climbs, it was very much raced like a classic throughout the afternoon.
With 47 kilometers to go Fred Wright and Laurence Pithie attacked from the peloton and got a gap; and later they were joined by Wright's teammate Aimé de Gendt. The trio worked together well and maintained their distance over a peloton where the pace was often inconsistent, with attacks trying to bridge across. The gap was minimal by the time the riders reached the final kilometers, but Aimé de Gendt sacrificed himself to keep the gap alive.
In the final sprint, Laurence Pithie managed to get the better of Wright, effectively taking his first win of the year whilst Pinarello's two riders joined him on the podium. 6 seconds behind, Jordi Meeus won the sprint for fourth place.
