Jonas Vingegaard during stage 9 of the 2026 Giro d'Italia
Stage 9 of the 2026 Giro d'Italia was mostly flat but with a difficult summit finish where the overall classification contenders had another chance to fight for the stage win. This saw Jonas Vingegaard take the stage win, winning his second stage of the week and reaching closer to Afonso Eulálio.
The first 150 kilometers of the final day in the first week of the Giro d'Italia were almost completely pan-flat, which ultimately made for a fast day on the bike. The flat start didn't favour the formation of a strong breakaway, ultimately it was made up of mostly rouleurs: Davide Ballerini, Lorenzo Milesi, Mattia Bais, Tim Naberman, Jonas Geens, Martin Marcellusi and Sakarias Koller Loland. Einer Rubio was the exception, however the breakaway wasn't to be favoured for the stage win.
That is because Decathlon CMA CGM Team made the decision to push the pace all day long, controlling the breakaway, and with intentions of attacking with Felix Gall. The French team never let the gap grow much above the 2-minute mark. With 74 kilometers to go, a planned attack saw Giulio Ciccone and Diego Ulissi attack in a small hilltop from the peloton.

Giulio Ciccone infiltrates the breakaway

They were joined by Toon Aerts and bridged across to the breakaway. It wa an effective effort, however Decathlon never slowed down and the group never enjoyed a sizeable lead - whilst the lack of collaboration from some riders, most notably Aerts, led to frequent splits and misunderstandings.
As the peloton entered the final sequence of climbs, the front group began to split. The strongest would come to the front, and it was evident that Ciccone and Rubio had an extra edge over the rest. The duo entered the final 10-kilometer climb to Corno Alle Scale with approximately 1 minute of lead.
Ciccone went solo with 8 kilometers to go. In the peloton, Decathlon and then Visma set a hard pace on the climb, although only the final 3 kilometers would see real action as the average gradients would grow to 10%. Visma took over the front but as soon as the gradients went up, Felix Gall attacked.
With Giulio Pellizzari on a bad day and dropped early, there was every reason for the Austrian to continue an attack that saw him drop everyone but Jonas Vingegaard. The duo caught Ciccone with just under 2 kilometers to go, whilst Thymen Arensman was chasing by himself afterwards.
Right after crossing the 1 kilometer to go sign Vingegaard attacked. The Dane rode to victory, with Gall arriving only a few seconds after. Davide Piganzoli closed a brilliant third place on the day, himself climbing up the GC; whilst Arensman was fourth and none other than pink jersey Afonso Eulálio rode to fifth on the day - not only limiting losses to Vingegaard, but extending his gap over several of his direct rivals.
