Tour de France, World Championships, Vuelta a Espana and Il Lombardia. Those are the four big races that Remco Evenepoel may target later in the season but which path he will choose is uncertain. Jan Bakelants believes that the World Champion should make his way towards the Tour de France.
“This is the situation now and you have to make the best of it," Jan Bakelants recently said. "Don't grieve too long now. Cry for ten days, then change your mind and look ahead again." The Belgian has spent large months preparing for the Giro d'Italia, but had to abandon with Covid-19. Luckily for him he won two stages in the opening week and also dominantly conquered Liège-Bastogne-Liège, still making for a successful spring.
His goals were bigger however, the Giro win being one obviously. With a Tour de France debut initially planned for 2024, he could make his way to France this summer so as to obtain experience in the race.“I think the Tour can offer an attractive perspective for the second part of the season, and give the year an unexpected turn," Bakelants argues.
"It just might turn out to be an incredible success. And that many valuable lessons are taken home.” Without as much pressure as he would otherwise, it becomes a big possibility to see the World champion race against the likes of Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard - but with more modest ambitions and likely little support.
