The Giro d'Italia was presented last evening in Italy and it was the confirmation that Team Visma | Lease a Bike needed. Simon Yates will chase the overall classification, whilst Jonas Vingegaard will keep his powder dry and commit 100% to the goal of beating Tadej Pogacar at the Tour de France.

Wout van Aert and Olav Kooij had previously confirmed their presence in the first Grand Tour of the season in chase of stage wins, and the route will provide plenty opportunities. In the hunt for the overall classification will be Simon Yates, who came close back in 2018.

Yates would not have been perfectly pleased with the addition of the Colle delle Finestre on the very final mountain stage of this route, taking into consideration that this was the climb where he lost the race 7 years ago, however he will now be the GC leader whilst Jonas Vingegaard will not race.

There were big doubts on whether Vingegaard would race the Giro or not, taking into consideration the achievement of Tadej Pogacar this year combining the two. With Remco Evenepoel and Pogacar himself absent from the Corsa Rosa, it would be a golden opportunity to fight for the win, however he will fully focus on the Tour de France as reported by multiple sources at Visma's media day.

As is the case with Tadej Pogacar, the Dane is also having his eyes on the Vuelta a España. It is very possible that we will have two battles for the same Grand Tour this year between the two as the World Champion seeks to complete his Grand Tour trilogy, and Vingegaard could make a return after almost winning it in 2023 (then won by teammate Sepp Kuss) and missing out last summer so that he would be present for the birth of his child. The Vuelta should be confirmed later in the year.
