With 25km left to go, a front three of Tupalik, Vervenne and Rosenlund held a gap of 29 seconds to the peloton. But could they make it stick? With Alpecin-Deceuninck leading the peloton, it looked set to be a difficult task.
But then Del Grosso was at it again, taking a small advantage over the peloton with 14km to go. The Dutch under 23 champion was a real danger, and
Biniam Girmay was one of the riders in pursuit.
But the dangerous move did not stick, and it was all to play for once again. Would the chase cost Girmay, as the race came down to a sprint?
Meanwhile, disaster struck for Elia Viviani as he suffered a mechanical in the closing stages and had to swap bikes.
And so it came down to a sprint, and a chaotic lead up too. There was plenty of shoulder barging along the way, and ultimately a crash before the final turn.
It was not be for Girmay, and the win went to the Cofidis rider
Milan Fretin ahead of Simon Dehairs.
