John Degenkolb was involved in
a crash pre-stage during recon, but the full peloton navigated to the finish line on the opening day. Three XDS Astana rider crashed during the stage, but finished the race. Groupama-FDJ United also saw two riders crash -
Guillaume Martin and
Clement Berthet fell but finished the stage. The French team later confirmed that Berthet would abandon before stage 2.
Matej Mohoric was also a victim of a crash on the stage.
Stage 2
With Berthet a DNS at the start of the day, no other rider departed on stage 2. There were a couple of crashes however, with the likes of: Kelland O’Brien, Robbe Dhondt, Aaron Gate, Biniam Girmay, Silvan Dillier, Maxim Van Gils, Anthon Charmig and Dorian Godon involved.
Stage 3
After a nightmare opening couple of days battling illness, Arnaud De Lie was suffering again on stage 3, and ultimately forced out of the race through a DNF.
Elsewhere, the peloton was rocked by a mass crash early on the day, with Mathias Vacek, Bruno Armirail, Tobias Foss, Thymen Arensman, Joshua Tarling, Michal Kwiatkowski and Matthew Riccitello all involved.
Stage 4
Kelland O'Brien, victim of a crash earlier in the race, has spent a long day by himself this afternoon at the Tour de France and did not cross the finish line within the time limit of the stage. Whilst the time limit was set at 37:37 minutes, the Team Jayco AlUla rider arrived over 46 minutes after stage winner Mads Pedersen, and has been removed from the race.
The stage also saw the crash of Briton Jake Stewart who underwent an on-site concussion protocol test; the NSN Cycling Team rider fell alongside other riders such as George Bennett, Matej Mohoric, Simone Velasco and Silvan Dillier.
Stage 5
A calm day throughout most of the stage but a very tense finale saw two falls. One involved Cofidis rider Jenthe Biermans in the closing kilometers of the stage; however it was the crash with 5.8 kilometers to go that marked the stage.
Jonas Vingegaard was involved and needed a bike change, whilst the likes of
Michael Matthews, Aurélien Paret-Peintre, Jasper Stuyven and
Alex Molenaar. The latter was reported by
AS to have lost memory of his crash, and has been assessed for a possible concussion after crashing and hitting his head.
