Cycling fans and memorabilia enthusiasts now have the chance to own a race-worn Jersey from either Mathieu van der Poel and/or Annemiek van Vleuten, courtesy of a special auction for the Youth Sports & Culture Fund.
“This is the suit I wore during the Tour de France. I had become world champion in 2022, so I was at the start of the Tour in this suit. The jersey number is still on it, but I had to wash it,” van Vleuten explains of the Rainbow Jersey she has given up, in conversation with TV program Beau. “It has jersey number 1 on it because I won the Tour the year before.”
With her legendary career now having reached its finish line, van Vleuten admits parting ways with one of her final-ever Rainbow Jerseys was difficult, but the good cause took precedence. "But I also already have a yellow jersey at home with my jersey number on it, and the jersey in which I became world champion,” she says. “I didn't want to get rid of this sweater, but I'm happy to do so for a good cause.”
“As a child I discovered the fun and enjoyment of playing sports together,” van Vleuten concludes. “That does not necessarily have to lead to top sport, but it is essential that they are given the opportunity to play sports.”
