Marco Haller entered the BEMER Cyclassics as an outsider, however few would've expected the Austrian to win, specially on a day where he directly had to battle world-class competition.
BORA had the numbers and into the final ascent of the Waseberg they had Ide Schelling and Patrick Konrad putting on the pressure in the peloton. As Wout van Aert attacked, Konrad managed to hang on to an offensive trio, and Marco Haller was the only rider able to bridge across afterwards. The quintet worked together to prevent a bunch sprint, successfully, and Haller tried to surprise with an easrly sprint.
“The sprint was very good. To beat Wout van Aert in a sprint is one thing, but to have good legs after such a hard race is another," Haller said in a post-race interview. He managed to keep the speed towards the line and held off Wout van Aert and Quinten Hermans to win the German race. "To take the victory in such a big race and for a German outfit, I’m very proud and happy," he stated.
Haller said that "one meter before the line actually" was when he believed he would win the race, however that dream as came true. Close to home, in Germany, and racing for the home team, Haller has raced to the biggest win of his career on a season that is currently incredibly successful for the 31-year old.
