Lorena Wiebes claimed the 2025 Dutch national road race
title with a commanding sprint victory, capitalising on a late crash that
eliminated two of her main rivals,
Marianne Vos and
Demi Vollering, from
contention.
The incident occurred just 7km from the finish, with both
Vos and Vollering caught in the pile-up. Although they were able to remount and
finish the race, neither could take part in the final sprint. It must be said
that the course was likely not hard enough for Vos or Vollering to contest the
victory, and Wiebes would still have been the clear favourite for victory
without the crash.
Up ahead, Charlotte Kool attempted to seize the initiative
by launching her sprint early. But Wiebes, the reigning European champion,
responded with ease, breezing past Kool in the final metres to take the win in
dominant fashion. Nienke Veenhoven secured third place to complete the podium.
