Team SD Worx - Protime have continued their dominance of the women's peloton lately as sprinting superstar, Lorena Wiebes powered to a comfortable victory on stage 3 of the 2024 Vuelta a Burgos Feminas.
With a three-rider attack of Sara Martin (Movistar Team), Eva van Agt (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Cypriot national champion Antri Christoforou (Roland) going clear early on, the peloton was keeping the breakaway on a relatively tight leash through the day. Heading into the final 40km, they had been joined by Neve Bradbury and Simone Boilard.
As the leaders kept the pace high to try and hold off a peloton that was within two minutes, it proved too much for Christoforou as the leading quintet turned into a quartet. Entering the final 10km, the four at the front still had around 40 seconds advantage over the bunch.
Despite the best efforts of the breakaway though, with 2.6km to go, the peloton, led by Marlen Reusser of Team SD Worx - Protime, swallowed up the attackers. From there, it was all about preparing for the inevitable bunch sprint finale, despite a big crash at around 1.5km to go, that saw a large group of riders take a trip to the deck.
Those that managed to avoid the incident headed into the final kilometre. In the sprint for the line, it was Lorena Wiebes on the front and there was simply no stopping the superstar sprinter as she took a comfortable win by over a bike length from Clara Copponi and Maike van der Duin.
