Results Tour de France 2026 stage 17 - Jasper Philipsen wins supersonic stage in 40-rider breakaway sprint

Stage 17 was one of the most difficult days at the Tour de France in terms of speed, with half of the stage having been ridden at the maximum including breakaway attempts from sprinters, GC contenders and classics specialists. A large breakaway containing dozens of riders eventually went up the road and the day was decided with a mini bunch sprint, won by Alpecin - Premier Tech's Jasper Philipsen.

The stage was a last ditch effort for most riders to try and save their race, with many dozen riders trying to form part of the day's breakaway. Throughout the opening 50 kilometers there were several climbs, with multiple splits in the peloton occuring at times. Tadej Pogacar looked to follow moves and the GC race followed the ever-changing situation at the head of the race.

At a moment, Isaac del Toro had been dropped from the peloton. A large breakaway had been formed, but the work of Decathlon and Uno-X brought it back. Mads Pedersen from behind created a second breakaway and Jasper Philipsen was also part of a large group trying to bridge across. Chaos was constant even after the peloton finally slowed down and allowed for the head of the race to go.

The ever-active Pedersen then formed a breakaway within the first group, having been joined by Ben Healy, Jasper Stuyven, Michal Kwiatkowski, Edward Planckaert and Felix Engelhardt. Their gap of a minute with 40 kilometers to go seemed as if it was going to lead to success.

But the cooperation didn't function, and with 27 kilometers to go Stuyven attacked off the front of the group. Despite the flat terrain and the numerical advantage, the group that he was riding with did not chase on, and was ultimately caught by the Jasper Philipsen 'mini peloton' behind. The likes of Olav Kooij, Michael Matthews, Lewis Askey, Huub Artz, Mathieu van der Poel, Matteo Jorgenson were all contenders to win the stage then if a sprint were to be. Jordan Jegat also used the move to further solidify his place in the Top10, gaining several minutes in the same form he did back in 2025.

Stuyven's valiant effort came to an end with just over 3 kilometers to go, on a small 4% climb that would end shortly before the finish. Per Strand Hagenes attacked that climb, but there was simply not enough difficulty to make it stick.

Over 40 riders headed into the final sprint, a small peloton sprint within the breakaway. Joshua Tarling tried to surprise in the final kilometer, ultimately bringing chaos in a very technical finale. Mathieu van der Poel picked up the pace and launched Jasper Philipsen, who finally achieved the victory he had been looking for throughout the three weeks. Mauro Schmid was second and Olav Kooij sprinted to third on the day.
