The latest reports have made it apparent that Jumbo Visma will not be receiving an extension to its sponsorship deal with Jumbo Supermarkets. The general manager, Richard Plugge, is not surprised by this move at all.
"That's something I saw coming," Plugge told NOS. He continues, "There's obviously something going on over there. We are also reconsidering and looking at how we will approach the future. As a team, we have become number one in the world. I think we want to continue with that, so we are looking with our partners at how we can move forward. That's what we're exploring now."
While acknowledging potential funding issues, he affirms that the project will move forward. "No, the project will definitely continue. We started this project and are now on the eve of the next phase. We're discussing that now. So, no, I'm not worried."
While the main sponsorship from Jumbo may be coming to an end after 2024, the team is looking at ways to continue collaborating with the company in different capacities. “It is unlikely that we will continue on the same footing. Together with Jumbo, we are now looking at whether we can add a new dimension to the collaboration from 2025.”
In response to the funding dilemma, he emphasizes that the team's financial stability is not solely dependent on Jumbo and Visma, as they have additional partners contributing to their budget. "We have more partners than just Jumbo. But of course, we hope that we can continue this for several more years," Plugge concluded.
