Two-time Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard is out of action currently. The Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader suffered a nasty crash at the recent edition of Paris-Nice, ultimately being forced to abandon the race. Although he is now back riding his bike, a return to competitive action could still be some way off.

"Jonas is already feeling better. That’s a huge relief for everyone, especially for Jonas. The most important thing is that he didn’t break his hand, and that he can start training again soon," Team Visma | Lease a Bike sports director Frans Maassen updates of the Dane's condition in conversation with Feltet.dk from the start of the 2025 Volta a Catalunya, where Vingegaard himself had hoped to ride. "To start this race, you need to be well-prepared, and that wasn’t the case. Jonas lost nine days of training, but the good thing is that he’s doing better now."

Although, as mentioned, Vingegaard is now back on the bike and building up his condition once again in training, a return to racing and the competitive peloton remains unclear. "I’m not going to say anything about what he will race," Vingegaard’s sports director states firmly. "We had a good conversation with Jonas last Friday, where we gave him some options. We didn’t want to make a decision immediately after the crash, even though we could have, but we felt it was better for everyone to take an extra moment to think."

It might turn out though, that Vingegaard isn't actually seen in the peloton again until the Criterium du Dauphine, with the iconic French stage race then being his only outing before the Tour de France later this summer. "We will make a final decision within the next couple of weeks," says Maassen, refusing to rule out the likelihood of the calendar outlined. "Yes, that plan is also a possibility."

"So far, we have a clear plan, but we still have to wait and see," the DS concludes his assessment. "The coaches need to think it through, and Jonas needs to think about it. He also has to talk it over with his family."

Yeah, might not feel like leaving his family or ending up like Senna or Schumacher. I’d have no problems with that, critics might have a tough time, finding a new target to focus on, maybe Remco? He’d be more tricky.
