Jasper Philipsen has recently won four stages and the green jersey at the Tour de France, but after the spring classics stint he had he comes as a big favourite for the World Championships. The runner-up at Paris-Roubaix doesn't have too much pressure however as he's backed by Wout van Aert and Remco Evenepoel.
“I think I can be quite relaxed at the start. The pressure is divided between three leaders, I just try to have a good race," Philipsen tells Wielerflits. He is correct, most eyes lay more on both Evenepoel and Van Aert in fact, with the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider sitting more as a third favourite for the Belgians, who have even more weapons to use in the technical Glasgow circuit. "It's a very long race, so it's going to be a long day. 270 kilometers, we will have to be patient.”
Endurance and mental strength will be key, specially as the final circuit will be, according to the preview of several riders, quite demanding both physically and mentally because of the need for constant focus on the tricky roads. Philipsen has talked in the last few days that he does not have the responsibility to attack and that if he is to win, it'll be in a sprint.
“Of course we have Van Aert and Evenepoel who are never afraid to race offensively. I think we are going to use that," the sprinter assures. "We just have to see that we are always in the game, in a winning position. We will take our responsibility, but we will not do it alone. There are still enough guys from us to get to the final.”
