Jasper Philipsen rues "a bit of bad luck" as late crash denies him sprint chance on stage 3 of Tirreno-Adriatico

After firing to a sprint victory on stage 2 of Tirreno-Adriatico 2024, Alpecin-Deceuninck's Jasper Philipsen was denied a chance to sprint again on stage 3 by a crash in the final few hundred metres.

“I allowed myself to be boxed in," the Belgian reflected disappointedly in a post-stage interview with Het Laatste Nieuws with Bahrain - Victorious' Phil Bauhaus the man to eventually take the win on the day. "f I had top legs, I could position myself better."

The weather throughout the day was pretty miserable for the riders as they tackled cold, wet and windy conditions. Philipsen believes this too may have played a big part in him hitting the deck in a dramatic finale.

I certainly wouldn't have wanted to fall, that's a bit of bad luck with the wet road surface and the twisting that was still there in the last corner. In principle I had a good day again," he concludes. “Tomorrow may be another sprint opportunity, with a slightly sloping finish. I hope for a dry day tomorrow."
