During yesterday's chaotic stage at the
Tour de France there were some riders who had a very good day physically, two of them being
Tadej Pogacar and
Jasper Stuyven - two names who few would imagine seeing on the attack together.
“He almost dropped me a few times. I struggled and held on his wheel and we finished in front. I’ll have to buy him a beer," Pogacar laughed off in an interview with Velonews. The unlikely duo moved away from the peloton with 18 kilometers to go in search of different goals. Whilst Pogacar wanted time on his rivals and to have a high pace so as to take as much time as possible on Primoz Roglic, Jasper Stuyven went after the stage.
The duo cut the gap to around 40 seconds with an attack over the ninth sector of the stage, however against a strong group of four up front who collaborated well, they could not cut it further and were loosing time. They arrived together at Arenberg, with Pogacar relatively successful however Stuyven with a look of disappointment after the breakaway failed to be reeled in.
In the end, the time gained on the majority of his GC rivals was of only 13 seconds. A very little difference, however a meaningful psychological blow to the competition which has seen the Slovenian isolated and with very little team support, however nevertheless still managing to take time on the competition in relatively unknown terrain.
