Jonas Vingegaard has last competed in August 2024. After a 2024 season marked by a very bad crash at Itzulia Basque Country, all of his physical and mental efforts were devoted to the Tour de France where he went on to finish second. He ended his season early to be with his wife as they welcomed their second child, and after a long winter in the sidelines the Dane is now looking forward to fight for wins once again.

Vingegaard will begin his 2025 season at the Volta ao Algarve. “This will be my first participation in the Volta ao Algarve, which definitely adds extra motivation. I hope I can immediately compete for the overall win, although I primarily see the race as preparation for my bigger goals later in the season," the Dane said in a press release

A rider of such tremendous quality, it should not be doubted that Vingegaard will be amongst the best in the race and is a clear contender for overall victory. The presence of his former teammate Primoz Roglic will make for an exciting first battle of the year between two of the so-called 'big 4' overall classification specialists, a battle that will take place over the summit finish to the Alto da Fóia and the final 19-kilometer long time-trial which ends atop the Alto do Malhão.

Visma will go to Portugal with a very strong lineup, truly a block that is capable of taking a yellow jersey back to the Netherlands. "It’s great to be surrounded by such a strong team right from the start, with Wout, Sepp Kuss, Tiesj Benoot, Wilco Kelderman, and Loe van Belle. I’m excited to pin on a race number again.”

Besides Roglic, Vingegaard should have other rivals next week in the likes of João Almeida, Filippo Ganna and Stefan Küng - all specialists in the decisive final stage against the clock.

I think Roglic might have a chance to win overall, TT is better for him, if he can stay close enough on Foia he can win there because stages 1, 3 and 4 should be (reduced bunch) sprints
