Riejanne Markus has achieved a lifelong dream at Dutch National Championships winning the title in the individual time-trial. Speaking afterwards she could barely contain her delight.
“This was really such a big dream. The fact that we succeeded in the time trial is so cool. I have always inherited that passion for time trialling from my father," Markus told WielerFlits in a post-race interview. "I just think this is a great discipline within cycling. It's such a fair discipline and it's so incredibly hard. Especially this time with the long time trial. This is really super cool.”
Taking victory by 55 seconds ahead of runner-up Demi Vollering, Markus herself though was not listening to any information about times whilst on the course. “I actually got nothing. I'm just trying to put in my best ride and it's no use knowing what the competition is doing. I do come close to fulling, so that gave me a lot of confidence.”
“We have a lot of ambitions this Saturday. I'm not just going to hand over that sweater. I thoroughly enjoyed a year in that jersey," continues Markus who will be looking to double up her success by defending her Dutch national road race championship. "So morale is high, but the Dutch Championship is also one of the most difficult competitions to win. It certainly won't be easy.”
