As expected, the first time-trial of the 2024 Giro d'Italia, has completely reshuffled the Top 10 of the general classification. It was the longest ITT at the race since 2015 and some of the time gaps were equally big by the finish line.
The two big favourites for the stage victory today did not disappoint. Filippo Ganna proved to be the strongest on the flat, completely dominating the first two intermediate points. Tadej Pogacar meanwhile flew up the final climb, making up the 47-second deficit he had over the Italian INEOS Grenadiers star and eventually taking the stage win.
As for the overall, it was expected that Pogacar would take a lot of time off his direct rivals, but behind, a somewhat disappointing showing from Geraint Thomas, matched by a very impressive performance by Daniel Martinez has seen places 2 and 3 swap hands.
Ben O'Connor is up to 4th, Luke Plapp up to 5th and into the White Jersey for Best Young Rider. Alexey Lutsenko rises from 10th to 6th as Cian Uijtdebroeks managed to limit his losses and stay in touch in 7th. Completing the top-10, Antonio Tiberi, Filippo Zana and Lorenzo Fortunato.
GENERAL RANKING OF THE GIRO D'ITALIA 2024 AFTER STAGE 7.
1. Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates)
2. Daniel Martínez (BORA - hansgrohe): +2:36
3. Geraint Thomas (INEOS Grenadiers): +2:46

Surprised Dani Martinez is in 2nd, considering Bora is not really a GC team these days, but well done for him, regardless!

I see Arensman is just outside the top 10 at 11.

Yes a top 5 well within his sights.

As it is for (at least) 6 others.

Like musical chairs, 7 riders for 5 spots and no-one knows when the music will stop ;-)

Plapp and Arensman have been mentioned for their big jumps but Tiberi was impressive too. If these 3 are warming up now for the next 2 weeks, this could start getting almost exciting.

I think that this is what everyone expected after the first TT. Pogacar is in a league of his own.
