George Bennett has spent a large part of his career in Jumbo-Visma providing support for it's main climbers, however in 2022 he's switched to
UAE Team Emirates where he will keep having the climbing support role, but this time for the defending champion of the
Tour de France.
“Tadej? He is the best climber in the world, my job is to be there for him as long as possible," he told VeloNews. Bennett is in the shortlist for the team into it's biggest goal of the season, and his recent performance at the Critérium du Dauphiné - where he finished 20th in the GC - indicates that he's on the right path to the French race.
Alongside the likes of Brandon McNulty, Rafal Majka and Marc Soler, the Kiwi will be playing a crucial role against the depth that some other teams present. “It’s exciting. I’m looking forward to it. Sometimes when you’re the domestique it would be frustrating if the leader would be worse than you in the mountains, but with Tadej, you know he’s going to push you to the absolute limit. He needs you to the death, he needs you right to the very end.”
“When you’re doing it for somebody who really is there to win the race and a really nice guy as well, then it’s one of the most exciting jobs in the world," he concluded.
