On the 3rd of October 2026, the European Championships in Ljubljana, Slovenia, have the women's elite road race as the first major event. Elisa Longo Borghini, Marlen Reusser and more will battle for the iconic European jersey. Below, you will find the favourites for the race, the route and a preview.
The women's road race European Championships were first held in 2016 and immediately historical figures took to the start and began taking victories, quickly bringing this race into one of the most prestigious positions in the calendar.
Anna van der Breggen was the first winner of the race, and the following year the legend Marianne Vos took her only title to date on this race. In 2018 Marta Bastianelli took the title, in what ended up being a special year as up to date, it has been the only non-Dutch victory.
Amy Pieters, Annemiek van Vleuten, Ellen van Dijk, Lorena Wiebes (2023 and 2025) and Mischa Bredewold have all taken victories for the Netherlands, whilst Demi Vollering took her first title in 2025.
Profile: Ljubljana - Sencur
Ljubljana - Sencur, 131 kilometers
The race will begin in Slovenia's capital of Ljubljana, moving through Komenda - the hometown of the absent Tadej Pogacar - and then will move towards the final circuit which will decide the race.
The race is 131 kilometers in length, and features just over 1300 meters of climbing. Unlike the World Championships, the circuit is rather simply, with one obvious feature: the climb to Mozjanca which is 2.1 kilometers long at just 10%. The climb will be tackled on two different occasions.
The riders descend back into Sencur, where the finale will be held. In the final lap, the riders will be 14.5 kilometers away from the finish line at this point. The summit of the climb is followed by a small plateau section of about 3.5 kilometers in distance.
After a fast descent, only the final 5 kilometers will truly be flat, meaning that putting on a chase over such terrain is difficult. However, the climb will be quite difficult on each occasion, and the endurance aspect will not be as present as at the World Championships.
Preview 2026 women's elite road race European championships
With Demi Vollering most likely absent, the race is open for plenty riders to fight for a key title. Marlen Reusser, Elisa Longo Borghini and Paula Blasi will all be present in order to try and take what they weren't able to at the World Championships.
The likes of Noemi Ruëgg, Juliette Berthet, Cédrine Kerbaol and Femke de Vries will also be eager to fight for what could be a career-changing title.

Over the course of his career, he has conducted approximately 100 interviews across road cycling and cyclocross, ranging from one-to-one conversations and online formats to press conferences and on-site pre- and post-race coverage. His interviews include leading riders, team managers, and prominent figures within cycling media: Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Mathieu van der Poel, Primoz Roglic, Wout van Aert, Joao Almeida and Tom Pidcock; managers like Patrick Lefevere and Joxean Matxin; and YouTube personality Bryan Kennedy (BKXC)...
Within 18 months of launch, he helped grow CyclingUpToDate’s English-language platform into one of the most-read cycling news websites, built entirely from the ground up. As both a professional journalist and lifelong cycling enthusiast, his focus remains on delivering accurate, timely, and well-contextualized coverage.
