Egan Bernal concludes season to focus on recovery and upcoming knee surgery

Egan Bernal has overcame tremendous and serious injuries to recover in time to race this year, which came as a surprise to many, but mostly an inspirational story. The Colombian returned to the peloton less than seven months after almost losing his life, and he will now return to Colombia to focus on his recovery.

Bernal has raced the Tour of Denmark and Deutschland Tour in quick succession, revealing the endurance and getting some race rhythm back in August. He's ridden into Italy over the last week, not finishing the Giro della Toscana, but finishing a surprisingly positive 28th place in the hilly Coppa Sabatini, scoring his first UCI points of the year. Those will be his only points however, as he is set to finish his season in order to prioritize his health.

Gazzetta dello Sport's Ciro Scognamiglio reported that Bernal has changed his initial plans of riding the Cro Race and Il Lombardia, and will instead be traveling to Colombia soon. He will have a knee surgery, and will begin his off-season with priority in recovering his body's complete functions, and then focus on the 2023 season.
