The thirteenth stage of the Tour de France concluded on Friday with Danish rider Mads Pedersen's stage victory. Dylan Groenewegen finished in 83rd position , 6 minutes behind Pedersen.
Groenewegen decided against joining the breakaway at the start of the race. “That was because of that last climb. You never know what happens there. In the Dauphiné, we did ride in front, and they did continue on the final climb,” Groenewegen told NOS.
But his decision turned out to be a big mistake as later in the stage, he could not catch up with the breakaway riders.“I should have made the call earlier that we had to ride. I blame myself for that," said Groenewegen. He continues, "Beforehand, I knew it was not a 100% chance. But at the moment, I am climbing much better than expected. So you do miss an opportunity.”
He remains hopeful for the upcoming stages. "I hope now again on Sunday. Today was also a chance, so I am disappointed about that. We have to have a meeting about that. I will say that there are two more chances and that I want to take them," concludes Groenewegen. He currently holds the 140th position in GC, 2 hours and 46 minutes behind overall leader Jonas Vingegaard.
