After the opportunities for the sprint stages have past,
Team BikeExchange - Jayco have announced the departure of
Dylan Groenewegen from the Critérium du Dauphiné so as to further prepare for the Tour de France.
The Dutch sprinter has struggled through the opening days of the race as the high pace in the days' small hills proved too complicated. Groenewegen counted with the support of his team but didn't manage to be in contention for any stage win. Yesterday in Gap he finished in eighth place, second from the peloton after having resisted the pace in the peloton throughout the day.
Some days ago Groenewegen said in an interview that his preparation was going down the right path: "It sounds a bit crazy now because I'm still empty-handed. But the shape is better than ever... For a pure sprinter it is very difficult to survive the finals here. We know what we are doing and we also know that the Tour is the main goal of the year." It is a possibility that he will be joining the team in the upcoming Tour of Slovenia before heading to Denmark for the Grand Depart.
