The 2026 World Championships in Montreal promise to be quite a bit more open race compared to previous editions. That does not mean that Tadej Pogacar wouldn't be a big favourite to complete a hat-trick, but his rivals sense an opportunity to catch the Slovenian off-guard. And Denmark brings no less than two strong cards with that goal in mind.
The national coach Michael Mørkøv bets on tested Lidl-Trek duo Mattias Skjelmose and Mads Pedersen to lead the Scandinavians' charge in Canada. Both men are currently active at the on-going Vuelta a Espana.
Mads Pedersen will hope to repeat his world title from 2019 Yorkshire. Skjelmose is yet to podium the championships, but has already showed his potential in Rwanda last season when he finished 4th in one of the hardest World Championships in history.
The Lidl-Trek duo will be supported on the 273.2-kilometer course by Kasper Asgreen, Mikkel Bjerg, Andreas Kron, Michael Valgren, Mikkel Honoré, and Soren Kragh Andersen.
Mørkøv makes no secret of his ambitions with this strong selection. "With Mattias and Mads as captains, I expect us to compete for the world championship," he declares.
In the time trial, Mikkel Bjerg and Kasper Asgreen will defend the Danish colors. "Mikkel and Kasper have been among the world's best time trial riders for a number of years, and they both have the potential to compete for the medals," says Mørkøv.
