Bad news for Bora-hansgrohe, Florian Lipowitz abandons Giro d'Italia leaving Daniel Martínez further isolated in the mountains

BORA - hansgrohe's lineup choice for the Giro d'Italia was the one riddled with the most questions. Partly, this was due to breakthrough climber Florian Lipowitz who showed incredible form ahead of the Corsa Rosa and was selected; but the German has now abandoned the race ill.

Lipowitz' selection is believed to have replaced German national champion Emanuel Buchmann who had high hopes of battling for good results and was outspoken in his criticism following the snub. The team also built a leadout for Sam Welsford but the Australian was then not selected; but the leadout men remained in the lineup.

With Daniel Martínez starting the race in great form - the Colombian currently sits third place - he will require support in the mountains. Lipowitz put on a big ride at the Santuario di Oropa. Martínez is left with Max Schachmann and Giovanni Aleotti left as support for the climbs, arguably less than rival teams.
