Thanks to your votes, newly crowned cyclocross European champion Thibau Nys has been named Breakthrough Rider of the Year as part of the 2024 CyclingUpToDate End of Season Awards!
You voted in your numbers for the first awards category of the 2024 CyclingUpToDate End of Season Awards and in the end, after a very closely fought battle, Lidl-Trek and Baloise - Trek Lions' Nys narroqly defeated the rest of the nominees such as 2nd placed Pablo Castrillo, 3rd placed Lennert van Eetvelt and the likes of Isaac del Toro, Florian Lipowitz and Maxim van Gils.
Although Nys has been a name more predominantly associated with cyclocross over the years, Thibau Nys has made big strides on the road in 2024, taking no fewer than nine victories over the course of the season. Starting with a stage win at the Tour de Romandie in April, Nys was then the strongest of the field at the Tour de Hongrie, winning stage 3 and stage 4 before securing the overall victory to boot. After stages of the Tour of Norway and the Tour de Suisse, Nys then took not one but three victories at the Tour de Pologne. Having already starred on his return to cyclocross this winter taking the European title, 2024 has been a real breakthrough season for the 21-year-old Belgian.
Taking a total of 29% of the vote, things were extremely close in the polls though as double Vuelta stage winner Castrillo was selected by 22% and Lotto Dstny's Van Eetvelt sharing 19% of the vote.
Don't forget though, this is only the first of the awards to be announced this week and as shown here, every vote could be crucial.
