António Morgado is one of the most exciting young riders in the peloton and an absolute breakthrough in the cobbled classics. However, he maintains good form and has won the second stage of the Vuelta a Asturias today in unexpected circumstances.
A five-rider group formed the breakaway of the day on this hilly stage, which featured a flat finale. However Movistar and Fernando Gaviria were not alive to the occasion, not being present in the final sprint that would decide the stage. Caja Rural's Samuel Fernández attacked within the final kilometers and still threatened the peloton, but ultimately he could not hold off the peloton.
A sprint between non-sprinters would ensure, António Morgado surprised and took his second pro win by beating Albert Torres and his own teammate and race leader Isaac Del Toro to the line.
