Another blow for Isaac del Toro as key domestique abandons 2025 Giro d'Italia

Everything was looking rosy for UAE Team Emirates - XRG just a couple of days ago. After the final rest day however, things have gone downhill sharply for the leading team in the peloton, and early on stage 17, another blow has been given to Maglia Rosa Isaac del Toro.

Both Del Toro and co-leader Juan Ayuso lost time on stage 16, meaning a big day was required for UAE Team Emirates - XRG on stage 17. With around 70km still to go however, the Mexican race leader has lost one of his key domestiques following the abandon of the always reliable Jay Vine. The reason behind Vine's abandon isn't totally clear yet, but one thing that is for certain is that it's another hit to the morale of the UAE team ahead of the a decisive few days in the Italian mountains. Notably, Vine also becomes the second Australian abandon of the day following Luke Plapp.
