So far at the 2023 Tour de France, the fight for the Maillot Jaune between Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard has been a tight, back-and-forth contest. With just 17 seconds between the pair heading into a potentially decisive stage 13, Allan Peiper is confident in Pogacar's chances.
A long-term mentor of the UAE Team Emirates leader, Peiper believes the current position Pogacar holds, just 17 seconds off the race lead is the perfect place to be at this stage in the race. "UAE has been riding quietly for the last few days. They have learned from their mistakes. I think that's an intelligent approach," the Australian notes. "So I have no doubt that Pogacar will win the Tour this year. He is currently only a few seconds behind, which is a perfect position. In addition, he has also explored the time trial very closely and Primoz Roglic is not there this year."
Both Peiper and Pogacar still maintain contact with each other despite the fact the former no longer works for UAE Team Emirates. Whilst the race is on however, Peiper is refraining from giving any advice or notes to the Slovenian.
!I don't call Pogacar. He has enough on his ears there in the Tour. But if I feel or think I want to share something, I send a message," he tells HLN. "He is friendly to everyone and always walks with a smile on his face. That, and his way of racing, make him popular. It may not always be smart, but the fans really like it."
