Alex Molenaar took his first victory of the season in the final stage of the Tour de Langkawi. The Dutchman was part of the breakaway and he beat Jason Osborne in the final sprint to secure the win
This victory is a major boost for his confidence and it will also increase the probability of him finding a new team before the next season starts. "I don't have a contract yet, so hopefully, this will help," Molenaar said in post race interview.
Molenaar's last victory was in the Tour of Romania, where he finished first overall. So this stage win was a surprise for himself also, “We were in the breakaway with very good riders of a very high level. I felt pretty good, but the other riders were also very strong. It was very difficult, but it worked out," said Molenaar.
It came down to a final sprint between him and Osborne to determine the winner, Molenaar narrowly won the sprint and took the gold. "In the final, I had a hard time, but so did the other guys. I took it easy on my takeovers. In the sprint, I was able to beat the guy from Alpecin. It's incredible. I didn't expect it at all. This is very important for me, and very nice," concluded Molenaar.
