Alberto Contador analyzed on Eurosport
Jonas Vingegaard's defeat in the time trial of stage 5 of the
Tour de France 2025. The Dane had a bad day on the bike and lost over a minute to Tadej Pogacar, perhaps the most noteworthy moment of the Tour thus far.
The Spaniard made it clear that the setback for the Dane and Visma is tremendous, especially as Vingegaard was quite superior to Pogacar in the time-trial of the Criterium du Dauphiné only a month before.
"Yes, it's a big disappointment, the team had said they were confident that in this specialty, both in today's time trial and the time trial climb, maybe Vingegaard could be superior to Pogacar and then as a long-distance rider in the final stages he could do better, but of course it must be a huge blow to see that the rider has not performed at the level he should."
'El Pistolero' doesn't believe that the time of Vingegaard in Caen reflects the fitness of the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider, who only 24 hours before matched Tadej Pogacar in a very steep ascent where there was an all-out effort.
"I think that the time he has set is not the time based on his form, it is not normal that he is not even in the top 10 in a time trial, it is not normal that he has left so much time. We don't know if mentally he has collapsed or has had a crisis of hydration, nutrition, something in the protocol that has not worked well or has not worked well and that is why he has not been at his level".
Contador urges the Dutch team to remain focused and leave the day behind, despite the gaps that have been created. "Now what they have to do is try to be strong, not lose sight of the goal and continue working as they were doing these days in all stages, to the millimeter to avoid making mistakes and try to make the other teams make them, but it is certainly a very hard blow."
