It's not been the best 24 hours in the life of Groupama - FDJ leader David Gaudu. Just hours after some very inflammatory criticism from former teammate Alexys Brunel, the Frenchman has now sadly been forced to abandon Tirreno-Adriatico following a crash.

As the break of the day were caught at around 37km to go, a crash at the back of the bunch sadly forced Gaudu into the back of his team car with an abandon, with a bloodied elbow the notable injuries sustained. The French team leader had had hopes for a good general classification result this week, but sadly those hopes have now left in the team car.

As mentioned, this comes on a day were Gaudu was already in the headlines. "I hate him. He spat on me on his stupid live streams. A horrible guy. He thinks he's a champion, but he's not," the Frenchman's former teammate Alexys Brunel told the French news outlet L'Equipe. "Those who have a problem with me should buy themselves some cojones. I may be breaking the rules of cycling, but if you crash, you're not yourself. You don't respect me? Me neither. He may have won races, but that doesn't make him great."
