Wout van Aert had an incredibly successful yet short stint last season in cyclocross, where he developed into a world-class rider, and this winter he is having a more serious calendar with his eyes on the rainbow jersey.
Het Laatste Nieuws have reported that van Aert will be making his debut soon in in the Kortrijk X2O Trofee race on the 26th of November, and is no longer planning to race the Hulst World Cup where he had been almost confirmed to be present alongside both Tom Pidcock and Mathieu van der Poel. His eyes will be on the World Championships in Hoogerheide which will take place on the 5th of February.
Until there, van Aert will follow a compact calendar featuring the Antwerp, Dublin, Gavere, Zonhoven and Benidorm World Cups, aswell as the main Christmas block, before going for another attempt at the rainbow jersey. The likes of Mathieu van der Poel and Tom Pidcock will likely have the same type of plan, whilst seasoned pros such as Eli Iserbyt, Lars van der Haar and Laurens Sweeck will keep their focus on the classifications and should be contenders for the rainbow stripes aswell.
Van Aert is likely aiming to rest for a few weeks after the Worlds, and plan a fitness peak well into the spring, aiming to have a more calm start to the cobbled classics then in 2022.
