Despite putting in a strong effort, Wout van Aert finished second to Mathieu van der Poel in the Benidorm World Cup.
"I am happy that I did not fall in the sprint, but mostly disappointed that I did not win," he said in the post-race interview.
He further added, "I knew the lead position was crucial for the win. I also bale about my tactics. I had to go all in on the last lap until the last park and then keep the lead there."
The final showdown was between him and the Dutchman, with Van der Poel ultimately outmanoeuvring him at the finish line. "But now I was mainly focused on staying in front instead of keeping pace. He passed me in the park, and I couldn't make up for that," concluded the Jumbo Visma rider.
