Thibau Nys is a rider that often suffers from inconsistency however he has started off the 2024-2025 season on the right foot. After winning the Koppenbergcross, he has once again hit hard where it matters, winning today the Tabor World Cup, the first of the discipline's most important competition.
Nys has had this race under eye for a while, and entered the race with confidence too. "I had a feeling already yesterday during the reckon, good sprint from corner to corner but then when I watched the races this morning I saw that it was really difficult to get an advantage but I immediately felt like I had good legs and I just went for it".
In a race where many of the main favourites either had a bad day or simply didn't have luck on their side, Nys thrived, not just in terms of legs but technically too, avoiding such mishaps. Cameron Mason, Michael Vanthourenhout and Joris Nieuwenhuis all suffered ill-timed incidents whilst the likes of Niels Vandeputte and Pim Ronhaar were unusually far away from the front of the race.
Nys got his winning gap after one of his rivals went down in front of him. "When Joris crashed in the second lap I got a small advantage and I always had the feeling that I just try to keep pushing and when they come back they come back," he explains. However that didn't happen, as he showed himself to be the best in the field today. "Halfway it felt like 'what I am I doing actually' because I didn't make it easy to myself. But it was the right tactics".
His decision to go hard came from not wanting to take the race to a sprint, almost as what happened to Lucinda Brand who had a hard time dropping the Crelan riders in her own race. "I didn't want to come in a situation where you go into the last three, four laps with ten guys together and I felt good so I just went for it".
